Questioning Theology
Was reading through Colossians for my 'larger context' assingment and had a question pop in my mind.
Is Colossians 2:4 ("I tell you this so that no-one may deceieve you by find-sounding arguments.") a warning against some forms of theology and philosophy? Since the verses before it talk about wisdom and knowledge of God ("in order that they may know the mystery of God" v. 2), and how we should only seek it through Christ ("...Christ, in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge."). Is this verse warning against theologians/philosophers who seek to quantify God, his character, will and 'being' through reason and human wisdom, as apposed to through Christ? If so, how far can we go in theology before we begin to do this? Also, what examples are there of this sort of thing in the church?
Thanks!
Matthew Howard.
